I am a Derek Sivers fan. I was 50% there when I saw his wonderful TED talk on ‘How to start a movement’ and was 100% there when I saw his wonderful Book Notes page!
Of late, I’ve been checking his blog posts and videos out sporadically and one of the 1 minute videos that really resonated was the one about ‘Hell Yeah’ or No.
I tend to be over committed more often than I like to admit and I find it very hard to say ‘No’ when I’m not sure myself if it is indeed a ‘No’ internally. His approach, of course, flips it around and it’s one I’m applying bit by bit these days. If it ain’t a ‘Hell yeah!’, I’m working hard to make sure I say ‘No!’. This is not easy and is work in progress but I’m certain I’ll get better at it.
There is no doubt in my mind that it’s the right thing though. It reminded me of a learning I’d posted ages ago – ‘Never say yes when you want to say a no.’
Really cool advice. Thanks Derek!
